How to Say Thank You to a Funeral Director: 19 Note Examples

When my grandmother passed away the funeral director who looked after our family did something I still haven’t forgotten. He noticed I was struggling to get through the arrangements meeting and just pushed a box of tissues across the table to me without making a big deal of it. Those little things really stay with you.

A good funeral director does a lot on your behalf during what may be the worst week of your life. They deal with the paperwork, the timings, phone calls and loads more small details you never even see. So once the funeral is done it’s only natural to want to say thank you.

The difficult part is knowing what to write. A funeral director isn’t a close friend or a family member but a regular “thanks” doesn’t feel like enough either.

So below you’ll find wording tips and thank you note examples you can use as they are or change to fit your own situation.

Should You Send a Funeral Director a Thank You Note?

You absolutely can and many families do. It isn’t expected in the way a thank you note is after someone sends flowers or a gift so you shouldn’t feel any pressure to do so. But funeral directors will tell you that a note saying thanks means a lot to them.

Their work is emotionally demanding and doesn’t get a lot of acknowledgement. A short note letting them know they helped your family through a very trying time is a kind thing to do. If they went out of their way for you saying so is going to be appreciated.

What to Include in Your Thank You Note

You don’t need to say anything fancy. A few sentences will be fine. If you’re not sure where to start the following structure works well:

  • Open by addressing them by name – “Dear [name]” is good or “Dear [name] and the team at [funeral home]” if you want to thank everyone
  • Thank them clearly for what they did – handling the arrangements, guiding you through the process, just simply being there etc.
  • Mention something specific if you can. A detail like “the way you explained our options without rushing us” shows you noticed how much they cared
  • Say what it meant to you or your family – “you made a week we thought would be impossible that little bit easier”
  • Finish with your name and the family name if it feels right

Handwritten is always a nice touch but an email or a card left at the funeral home is completely fine too.

Thanking the Whole Funeral Home Team

A lot of the time it’s not just the director but a team of people working behind the scenes. If you’d like to thank everyone at once address your note to the funeral home itself.

Dear [name] and everyone at [funeral home],

Thank you all so much for the care you showed our family while we said goodbye to [name]. From the first phone call to the day of the service, every person we met treated us with kindness and respect. Please pass on our gratitude to your whole team.

With warm thanks,
The [family name] family

Final Thoughts

Don’t worry too much about getting the wording exactly right. Funeral directors do this work because they care and knowing they made a difference to your family is the best thank you they could receive.

You might choose to send a handwritten card, an email or leave a small note at the funeral home, but whichever it is your words will mean a great deal.

If you still have more thank you notes to write you might find our guides on funeral thank you notes and thanking a minister for funeral services helpful too. And if people brought food or made donations we’ve got wording ready for funeral food and money and donations as well.
