Losing a daughter is a grief no parent should ever have to go through. It doesn’t matter if she was a newborn, a teenager or a grown woman with a family of her own, she was your little girl.
Some days prayer might be the only thing that gets you through. A lot of us find comfort in talking to God or saying a prayer for someone we truly loved who is no longer with us.
So we we have prayers for the loss of a daughter that you can say on your own, read at her funeral or share with your family. There are short prayers for hard moments, longer prayers for different ages and situations, prayers for her birthday and other difficult days and some Bible verses to read alongside them.
If you’re here because someone you care about has lost their daughter there’s a section near the end with prayers you can send them. You might also find wording for a card in our sympathy messages for the loss of a daughter.
Please change anything that doesn’t sound right for you. Putting her name into a prayer can make it feel much more your own.

Prayers for a Grieving Mother
The bond between a mother and daughter is a close one and losing it can feel like losing part of yourself. These prayers are written in a mom’s voice but anyone who raised her can use them.
A Mother’s Prayer for Her Daughter
Lord,
I braided her hair, wiped her tears
and sat on the edge of her bed talking until late.
I thought I’d watch her grow old.
Now I reach for my phone to call her and remember all over again.
Please look after my daughter the way I always tried to.
Let her know I’m still her mom
and that I’ll love her every day until I see her again.
Amen

A Prayer for the Empty Spaces
Heavenly Father,
Her coat is still on the hook.
Her favorite mug is still in the cupboard.
Everywhere I look there’s a space where she should be.
I don’t want to fill those spaces yet.
But please fill my heart with your peace
so the emptiness doesn’t swallow me whole.
Amen
- Lord, I’ll always be her mom. Please let her know that today
- God, I keep waiting for her to walk through the door. Comfort me when she doesn’t
- Heavenly Father, she was my daughter and my best friend. Please hold both of those for me
- Mary, mother of Jesus, you know a mother’s grief. Pray for me now
- Lord, give me the strength to look at her photos without falling apart. And when I do fall apart, catch me
Prayers for a Grieving Father
A dad often feels he’s meant to protect his little girl from everything. When he couldn’t the grief can come with guilt and anger too.
A Father’s Prayer for His Daughter
Father in heaven,
I held her the day she was born and promised I’d always keep her safe.
I taught her to ride a bike and to stand up for herself.
I always thought I’d be the one to walk her through life.
Now I have to let you walk with her instead.
Please keep her safe the way I wanted to.
And help me carry this without shutting out the people who need me.
Amen
- Lord, I couldn’t protect her. Help me let go of the guilt that isn’t mine
- God, she’ll always be daddy’s girl. Tell her I said so
- Heavenly Father, give me the courage to grieve out loud so my family knows it’s okay
- Lord, I’m so proud of the girl (or woman) she was. Let her know. Amen
Prayers for an Adult Daughter
When your daughter was grown you might be grieving alongside her husband or partner, her children and friends you barely knew. These prayers keep all of them in mind.
A Prayer for My Grown Daughter
Lord,
I watched her grow from a baby into a woman I admired.
She built a home and a life full of people who love her.
Please comfort her husband (or partner) and her children.
Help them feel her love in the little things she left behind.
Help me be there for them even while my own heart is breaking.
Thank you for every year of her life that I got to share.
Keep her safe with you.
Amen
- God, bless the children she left behind and let them grow up knowing how much she loved them
- Lord, she’ll always be my little girl, even though she was all grown up. Hold her close
- Heavenly Father, comfort her husband as he grieves the wife he loved
- God, thank you for the woman my daughter became. Let her kindness carry on through us
Prayers for a Teenage Daughter
Losing a daughter in her teens means losing so much that was just about to begin. These prayers are for parents who were watching her become herself.
A Prayer for My Teenage Girl
Lord,
She was just starting to figure out who she was.
She had her music, her friends and big plans
and I loved watching her change a little more every year.
I’ll never see her graduate or move into her first apartment.
Please let her know that the girl she already was
was more than enough.
Comfort her friends who are too young to understand this
and keep her safe with you.
Amen
- God, please be with her friends. They’re hurting and they don’t know where to put it
- Lord, forgive me for every argument we had. I know you saw the love underneath it
- Heavenly Father, she had so much life ahead of her. Let her live it fully with you
- Jesus, keep her laugh in my ears and her messy room in my memory
Prayers for a Baby or Young Daughter
When a baby girl or young child dies it can feel like time should stop. These prayers are for the littlest ones.
A Prayer for My Little Girl
Jesus,
You welcomed the little children and said not to keep them from you.
Now my little girl has come to you far too soon.
Please hold her hand and never let her be afraid.
Let her play and sing and dance
and know her mommy and daddy love her more than anything.
Give us the strength to keep going
and keep her brothers and sisters close to us.
Amen
- Lord, her life was so short, but she filled our hearts completely
- God, I had so many dreams for her. Help me trust that she’s safe with you now
- Heavenly Father, please rock my baby girl to sleep tonight. Amen
- Jesus, she was the tiniest thing and she changed everything. Thank you for her

Prayers After a Sudden or Unexpected Loss
If there was no warning and no chance to say goodbye the shock can be overwhelming. These prayers are for the first few days and weeks.
A Prayer When There Was No Goodbye
Lord,
I talked to her like it was any other day.
I didn’t know it would be the last time.
Please tell her everything I didn’t get to say.
Help me believe she knew how much I loved her
and give me peace when my mind won’t stop replaying it all.
Amen
- God, I can’t make sense of this. Stay with me while I try
- Lord, I’m angry and I’m scared. Please don’t let go of me
- Heavenly Father, I trust that she wasn’t alone. Thank you for being with her
- Jesus, I just need enough strength for tonight. I’ll ask again tomorrow

A Graveside Prayer for a Daughter
Lord,
We lay our daughter’s body to rest in this place

Grant her eternal rest.
Grant us the hope of seeing her again.
And each time we come back here
let us bring flowers, stories and as much love as grief.
Amen

A Closing Prayer for Her Service
Heavenly Father,
As we leave here today, go with us.

Prayers for Her Birthday, Mother’s Day and Anniversary
Her birthday, the anniversary of her death and holidays like Mother’s Day can be even harder especially if she was a mom herself or if you can’t stop thinking about the days you used to spend together. Our page of happy birthday in heaven messages has more ideas for marking her birthday.
A Prayer on My Daughter’s Birthday
Lord,
Today [Name] would have turned [age].
I should be calling her first thing in the morning to sing to her.
Instead I’m asking you to celebrate her for me.
Thank you for the day she was born.
It was one of the happiest days of my life
and nothing can ever take that away.
Amen

A Prayer on Mother’s Day
Heavenly Father,
Today is meant to be about mothers
and I’m still her mother, even though she isn’t here.
Thank you for making me her mom.
Comfort me through the cards and flowers and photos that aren’t for me this year.
And if she was a mother too, please wrap her children in love today.
Amen

- God, another year has gone by without her. Thank you for carrying us this far
- Lord, on the anniversary of her death, help me remember how she lived and not only how she died
- Heavenly Father, I light this candle for [Name] today. Keep her in your light. Amen
- God, the holidays don’t feel the same without her. Help us make room for her in new ways
Prayers to Send to Someone Who Lost a Daughter
If someone you love has lost their daughter a short prayer in a card or text can let them know you’re thinking of them. Keep it simple and don’t try to explain why it happened. Our guide on what to say to someone who lost a child suddenly has more help with the right words.

Dear ______,
I haven’t stopped thinking about you since I heard about [Name]. I wish there was something I could say that would make it hurt less, but I know there isn’t. So I’ve been praying for you every night. I’m asking God to give you rest, to keep your family close and to let you feel [Name]’s love even on the worst days.
I’ll drop off dinner on Thursday unless you tell me otherwise. No need to reply.

A Catholic Prayer for a Daughter
Many Catholic families say the Eternal Rest prayer at the funeral, at the grave and on anniversaries. You can also ask your parish to offer a Mass for your daughter. For more traditional prayers, see our prayers for the dead.
Eternal Rest
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace.
Amen.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.

Bible Verses for the Loss of a Daughter
Some parents like to read a verse before or after they pray. These are from the King James Version. There are more in our Bible verses about loss.
- “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18
- “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3
- “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
- “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
- “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
- “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13
- “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4
- “And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.” Luke 8:52
- “And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.” Mark 5:41
The last two come from the story of Jairus, a father whose young daughter died. Some parents find real hope in the words “she is not dead, but sleepeth.” Others find the story too hard to read right now.
Ways to Use These Prayers
- Say one each night before bed or first thing in the morning
- Print one in her funeral program or on funeral prayer cards
- Write one in a grief journal next to a memory of her
- Read one aloud at her grave on her birthday
- Light a candle at church and say it quietly
- Share a short one with a favorite photo of her
- Ask your church to include her name in the prayers that week
I hope one of these prayers brings you a little comfort tonight and reminds you that the love between you and your daughter is still there and always will be.
