When a pet dies your house can become very quiet. Being used to hearing their paws on the floor or them waiting at the door can be a shock when it’s not there anymore.
They were family. So it’s completely normal to grieve them that way. And if you’re someone with a strong faith then it’s normal to grieve that way too.
Below you’ll find prayers for the loss of a pet that you can say on your own, read at a small burial or share with someone whose dog, cat or other animal has died. There are short prayers, longer ones for different moments, prayers for children and a few Bible verses to read alongside them.
If you lost a dog we have a separate page of prayers for the loss of a dog too. And if you’re writing to a friend rather than praying for yourself our pet condolence messages may help.
Short Prayers for the Loss of a Pet
These are short enough to say in a hard moment, write on the back of a photo or post with a picture of them.

- God, you made every creature. Hold this little one gently now
- Heavenly Father, my heart hurts more than I expected. Please comfort me

Prayers for the Loss of a Dog
Dogs build their whole day around us so we feel their absence so much. These are a few prayers with more on our page of prayers for the loss of a dog.
A Prayer for My Faithful Friend
Lord,
He was waiting for me every single day.
At the window, at the door, at the end of the leash.
He never cared if I’d had a bad day. He was just glad I was home.
Thank you for giving me a friend that loyal.
Please let him run free now, with no stiff legs and no pain.
And help me get through the walks I’ll be taking on my own.
Amen
- Lord, thank you for the muddy paws and the wagging tail. I’d give anything for one more
- God, I still reach for the leash at walk time. Comfort me when I do
- Heavenly Father, she guarded our home for years. Please guard her now
- Lord, let him know he was a good boy. The very best boy. Amen
Prayers for the Loss of a Cat
Cats choose who they love and being chosen by one is special. These prayers are for that steady companionship. You might also find comfort in our loss of cat quotes.
A Prayer for My Cat
Heavenly Father,
She curled up on my lap every evening like it belonged to her.
She knew when I was sad and she always seemed to find me.
Now there’s no purring, no soft head bump and no little shadow following me around.
Thank you for every year she spent with us.
Please give her a warm patch of sunshine to rest in
and give me peace when I miss her most.
Amen
- Lord, thank you for the purring that got me through so many hard nights
- God, he was independent and stubborn and completely wonderful. Hold him close
- Heavenly Father, I keep expecting to hear her at the food bowl. Comfort me
- Lord, let my sweet cat rest somewhere warm and quiet. Amen
Prayers for Other Pets
Grief doesn’t depend on the size of the animal. A rabbit, a bird or a horse can leave just as big a hole.
A Prayer for a Small Pet
Lord,
He was small, but he mattered so much to us.
Thank you for his funny little habits
and for the way he made our home feel more alive.
You care for every creature, big and small.
Please care for him now
and help us be gentle with our grief, even when others don’t understand it.
Amen

A Prayer for a Horse
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the trust between us,
for early mornings in the barn and long rides in the open air.
She carried me so many miles and never let me down.
Let her rest in green pastures now, strong and free.
And help me find my way back to the barn without her.
Amen
- God, thank you for our little bird and the songs that filled our kitchen
- Lord, our rabbit was gentle and curious and loved. Please hold him softly
- Heavenly Father, he was only a hamster to some people, but he was ours. Thank you for him
- God, thank you for the years with our old tortoise. He was part of the family longer than some of us
- Lord, please give our sweet guinea pig a soft place to rest. Amen
Prayers When You Had to Put Your Pet to Sleep
Choosing to end a pet’s suffering is an act of love but it can leave a lot of guilt behind. These prayers are for that. Our guide on what to say when someone euthanizes their pet may help if you’re supporting someone else through it.
A Prayer for Peace After Saying Goodbye
Lord,
I made the hardest decision I’ve ever made for an animal I loved.
I held them while they went to sleep and I told them they were safe.
Part of me keeps asking if it was too soon or too late.
Please take that question from me.
Help me believe I did it out of love, because I did.
Let them know I was there until the very end.
Amen
- God, I chose their peace over my own heart. Please give me peace now too
- Lord, forgive me for the doubts I keep carrying. I only wanted to stop the pain
- Heavenly Father, thank you for the vet’s gentle hands and for a quiet goodbye
- Lord, I didn’t want to let go. Thank you for giving me the strength to do it anyway
- God, let [Name] wake up somewhere with no more pain. Amen
Prayers After a Sudden Loss
When a pet dies unexpectedly, from an accident or a short illness, there’s often no chance to say goodbye. These prayers are for that shock.
A Prayer When There Was No Goodbye
Heavenly Father,
This morning everything was normal.
Now my friend is gone and I can’t take it in.
I didn’t get to hold them one last time or tell them how loved they were.
Please tell them for me.
Quiet the “what ifs” running through my mind
and help me rest tonight.
Amen
- Lord, I keep replaying it. Please give my mind some rest
- God, I wasn’t ready. I don’t think I ever would have been, but not like this
- Heavenly Father, I trust they weren’t alone. Thank you for being with them
- Lord, help me forgive myself for things I couldn’t have known. Amen
Prayers for a Pet Burial or Memorial
Saying a few words when you bury your pet or scatter their ashes can bring a sense of peace. For ideas on how to plan it see our step-by-step guide on how to hold a pet funeral at home.
A Prayer at a Pet’s Grave
Loving God,
We’re here to say goodbye to [Name], who filled our home with so much joy.
We remember the way they played, the way they slept
and all the ways they made us laugh.
We lay their body to rest in your good earth.
Thank you for every day we had together.
Let this spot be a place where we remember them with love.
Amen

A Blessing Over a Pet’s Ashes
Lord,
These ashes are all we can hold of [Name] now,
but the love we shared is far bigger than this.

and let our hearts carry their memory always.
Amen

- Lord, bless this little grave and everyone who stops here to remember
- Heavenly Father, as we plant this flower, let our love for [Name] keep growing. Amen
Prayers for Children Who Lost a Pet
For many kids losing a pet is their first experience of death. Simple prayers they can say themselves, or say with you, can help them feel less alone. Our page on what to say to a child whose first pet died has more wording.
A Bedtime Prayer for a Child
Dear God,
Please look after [Name] for me.
I miss them a lot.
Thank you for all the times we played together.
Please give them lots of treats and a cozy bed in heaven.
And help me not be so sad tomorrow.
Amen
- Dear God, thank you for my best friend. Please give them a big hug from me

- God, help me remember all the fun things we did together

- God, thank you for [Name]. They were the best pet in the whole world
Prayers for the Empty House
The hardest moments often come later like when you go to fill a water bowl or hear a noise you think is them. These prayers are for those moments.
- Lord, I put out two bowls this morning out of habit. Please be gentle with me today
- God, I can’t bring myself to wash their blanket yet. Thank you that there’s no rush
- Heavenly Father, coming home is the hardest part. Meet me at the door
- Lord, I still look for them in their favorite spot. Help me smile when I do
- God, help me find room in my heart for this grief and for the good memories too
- Heavenly Father, give me the strength to put their things away when I’m ready, and not before. Amen
Prayers on a Pet’s Anniversary
The date they died, or the day you brought them home, can bring the grief back up. A short prayer is a simple way to mark it. Lighting a candle or looking through old photos together works well alongside it.
A Prayer One Year On
Heavenly Father,
It’s been a year since [Name] left us.
Some days I still feel the ache, and some days I laugh at the memories instead.
Thank you for carrying me through this year.
Thank you for the love that hasn’t faded at all.
Please keep my sweet friend safe with you.
Amen
- Lord, today we remember the day [Name] came home to us. What a gift that was
- God, another year without them. Thank you for the years we had with them
- Heavenly Father, I light this candle for [Name] today. Keep them in your light. Amen
A Prayer to St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis is the patron saint of animals, and many Catholic churches hold a blessing of the animals around his feast day on October 4. Some pet owners like to ask for his prayers after a loss. This is an original prayer written in that spirit.
A Prayer Asking St. Francis to Pray for Us
St. Francis,
You loved all of God’s creatures and called them your brothers and sisters.
Please pray for me as I grieve my beloved [Name].
Ask the Lord to comfort my heart
and to remember this gentle animal who brought so much joy to my life.
Help me to be thankful for the time we shared
and to treat every creature with the same kindness you showed.
Amen

Bible Verses for the Loss of a Pet
The Bible doesn’t say much directly about pets but it does speak often about God’s care for every living thing. These verses are from the King James Version. You’ll find more in our Bible verses about loss.
- “The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.” Psalm 145:9
- “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10
- “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?” Luke 12:6
- “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.” Matthew 10:29
- “Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.” Psalm 36:6
- “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” Isaiah 11:6
- “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18
- “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
- “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4
People often ask if pets go to heaven. Christian traditions don’t all agree on that, and it’s something you may want to talk through with your pastor or priest. What most people of faith do agree on is that God cares for His creatures and that your grief is real and worth bringing to Him.
Ways to Use These Prayers
- Say one at bedtime when the missing tends to feel worst
- Read one aloud at their grave or when you scatter their ashes
- Write one in a sympathy card for a friend whose pet died
- Add a short one to a memorial stone or plaque (our pet memorial plaque wording has ideas)
- Share one with a favorite photo of them on social media
- Say a simple one with your children before they go to sleep
- Write one in a journal alongside a memory you don’t want to forget
Some people won’t understand why you’re grieving so hard for an animal. But that shouldn’t make any difference. You don’t need anyone’s permission to miss them or to pray.
Some days your prayer might be a long thank you. Other days it might just be their name.
I hope one of these helps you feel a little less alone and reminds you that the love you shared with them doesn’t disappear.
