35 Thank You Notes for Hospice Nurses (What to Write)

Hospice nurses do something most of us couldn’t even imagine doing. They sit with the dying and comfort them when they’re frightened. Somehow they can cope with the weight of all that and not let it overwhelm them.

So when the time comes to thank one of them you can feel a bit lost. How do you sum up what they did in a few lines on a card? Or what do you say in person that does justice to all they do.

The good news is you don’t have to. Whatever you write, however clumsy it feels or sounds, will mean something to them. Hospice nurses aren’t expecting an amazing speech.

In fact they may be used to not getting any sort of thanks at all, sadly. So a few thoughtful words letting them know the difference they made is going to be more than enough.

But if you need some help with what to say or write then we have a selection of thank you note examples for hospice nurses. There are short ones, longer heartfelt notes, messages from the patient, messages from the family and a few for the whole hospice team. Take whichever feels right and use it as it is or alter any parts so that it fits your situation.

What to Write in a Thank You Note for a Hospice Nurse

There’s no formula you should stick to but if you’re staring at a blank card and struggle then the following is a simple way to put a note together:

  • Open by addressing them – “Dear ______” works perfectly or use their first name if you got to know them well
  • Thank them for the specific care they gave. Something like “thank you for looking after Mom with such kindness in her final weeks”
  • Add a line about what it meant to you – “knowing she wasn’t in pain and wasn’t alone brought us so much comfort”
  • Close with a few warm words like “with heartfelt thanks” before signing your name

You don’t need to overthink it. Mentioning your loved one by name and pointing to one thing the nurse did is all it really takes to make a note feel personal.

Tips for Writing Your Thank You Note

  • Be as honest as you can. It doesn’t need to sound impressive. Short and heartfelt is always going to be better than long and over the top language. So don’t feel like you need to fill the whole card.
  • Name your loved one and name one thing the nurse did. That specific detail makes it a more personal note instead of a generic sounding one.
  • Don’t worry if some time has passed. Grief makes everything harder and slower and a thank you note is welcome whenever it arrives, even if it’s months later.
  • If you’re thanking a team ask the hospice whether there’s a noticeboard or a manager you can send the card to so everyone gets to see it.
  • Handwrite it if you can. It will mean more than a typed one.
  • If writing feels like too much right now don’t worry. A simple “thank you for everything” signed with your name is good enough.

Hospice nurses don’t get many opportunities to hear how much they mattered to the families they help. So something as simple as reaching out to say thank you will mean the world to them.
