Sympathy Messages for an Unexpected Death

When you write to someone after a sudden death don’t try to make sense of it for them. Acknowledge the shock, say something kind about the person and offer something real. Our sympathy card messages have more wording ideas if you need it.

  • I just heard about _____ and I’m heartbroken for you. I’m so sorry
  • This doesn’t seem real. I’m holding you and your family close in my thoughts
  • _____ was taken far too soon. I’m so sorry for your loss

  • I can’t make this better, but I can sit with you while it hurts

A Longer Sympathy Note

If you’re closer to the family a short note lets you say a little more.

Dear ______,

I’m so sorry about _____. I still can’t believe it. I keep thinking about the last time I saw them, laughing at something silly, and it doesn’t seem possible that they’re gone.

I know there’s nothing anyone can say that makes a loss like this make sense. I just want you to know how much _____ meant to me and how much I’m thinking of you.

I’ll call next week to see if you need anything picked up or taken care of. If you’d rather not talk, that’s completely fine.

With love,
________

Poems for an Unexpected Death

These short poems and excerpts can be read at a funeral or memorial. For longer pieces our poems about grief has many more.

Funeral Blues (excerpt)

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

By W.H. Auden

********************************

Dirge Without Music (excerpt)

I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground.
So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:
Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely.

By Edna St. Vincent Millay

Death Is Nothing at All (excerpt)

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That we still are.

By Henry Scott Holland

********************************

No Time to Say Goodbye

You left between one ordinary hour and the next,
Your coat still on the hook, your cup still in the sink.
I keep the last words that we spoke
And wish I’d known to make them more.
But love was in the small things, every day,
And that is what I’m holding now.

Bible Verses for a Sudden Death

If faith is part of how you or the family are grieving these verses talk about how little we know of tomorrow and to God’s closeness in sorrow. They’re from the King James Version. You’ll find more in our Bible verses about loss.

  • “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1
  • “For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.” Ecclesiastes 9:12
  • “The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.” Isaiah 57:1
  • “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18
  • “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
  • “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
  • “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” Revelation 21:4

Tips for Using Unexpected Death Quotes

A quote can say what you can’t when you’re in shock but the timing and where you use then is important.

  • In the first few days keep it short. A family in shock doesn’t need a long poem, just a sign that you care
  • Skip “everything happens for a reason” and “at least they didn’t suffer” unless the family says it first
  • Avoid quotes that guess at the cause or the details of the death
  • Save the “life is short” quotes for yourself and not the grieving family’s
  • For a parent who lost a child suddenly see our guide on what to say to someone who lost a child suddenly
  • Usd a quote with a real memory if you have one. It means more than the quote alone
  • Always credit the author and check the wording against the original if it’s going on a program or headstone

There’s nothing that makes a sudden loss make sense. The shock does get easier with time although it often comes back in waves on birthdays, holidays and ordinary days.

If you’re the one grieving please go easy on yourself. And if you’re reaching out to someone else I hope one of these quotes helps you say what you’re feeling when you didn’t see any of this coming either.
