80 Sympathy Messages for Loss of a Cat

When my neighbor lost her cat I went over with a card. I’d written the sympathy message over and over before I was happy with what I had.

Her cat was a big orange tabby who used to sit in her front window every afternoon like he was supervising the whole street. She had him for eighteen years and he was a real fixture.

But everything I wrote sounded like it wasn’t enough for what she was going through or way too dramatic for a sympathy card about a cat.

In the end I wrote something simple about the window and how the street wouldn’t feel the same without him watching. She told me that she really appreciated it because it was a proper message and not just “your pet”.

If you want something similar then below you’ll find sympathy messages for the loss of a cat sorted by who you’re writing to and what happened. Use them as they are or take a line or two and add in your own bits.

Short Sympathy Messages for Loss of a Cat

Sympathy Card Messages for Loss of a Cat

If you’ve got a card to fill and you knew the cat (or at least heard plenty of stories) you can say a bit more. These longer messages work in a card, a sympathy letter or a heartfelt email.

******************

I was so sad to hear about [cat’s name]. I know she wasn’t “just a pet” to you. She was there every morning and every night for fourteen years, through moves and new jobs and every up and down. That kind of companionship is rare. I hope you can take a little comfort in knowing what a wonderful, spoiled life she had with you. Thinking of you.

******************

Dear [name], I’m so sorry about [cat’s name]. I’ll never forget how he’d appear out of nowhere the moment anyone opened a can of tuna, or how he’d park himself on whatever paper you were trying to read. He had more personality than most people I know. Please be gentle with yourself in the days ahead. Your home is going to feel different without him and that’s okay.

******************

There’s a special kind of quiet that follows the loss of a cat. No soft footsteps down the hall, no head bumps when you sit down, no complaining at 6 a.m. I know you’re feeling every bit of that right now. I’m so sorry. [Cat’s name] was lucky to have someone who loved her the way you did.

******************

I’m thinking of you as you say goodbye to [cat’s name]. Cats don’t give their trust to just anyone and he chose you. I hope you hold on to that. The purring, the slow blinks, the way he followed you room to room. All of that love doesn’t just disappear. With love and sympathy.

******************

I was so sorry to hear that [cat’s name] passed away. I know how hard you worked to take care of her these last few months, all the vet visits and the medicine and the late nights. She was comfortable and loved right up until the end because of you. That’s the very best any cat could ask for.

Sympathy Messages for When Someone Had to Put Their Cat to Sleep

Choosing euthanasia is one of the most painful decisions any cat owner can make. A lot of people feel such guilt afterwards even when it was absolutely the kind and right thing to do. The best messages reassure them that they did right by their cat. There’s a whole guide on what to say when someone euthanizes their pet if you’d like more ideas but these are a good place to start.

  • Making that choice for [cat’s name] was the last act of love you could give her. I’m so sorry you had to make it.

Sympathy Messages for When an Outdoor Cat Was Hit by a Car or Never Came Home

When a cat is hit by a car or never comes back the owner can feel shock, guilt and sometimes not even know for sure what happened. Please don’t bring up whether the cat should have been kept inside.

  • I’m so sorry about [cat’s name]. He loved his adventures outside and you gave him a happy, full life. None of this is your fault.
  • I can’t imagine how painful it is not to know for sure what happened. I’m thinking of you and hoping you find some peace.
  • She was such a free spirit. I know how much she loved her backyard patrol and sunbathing on the fence. I’m so sorry she’s gone.

  • She was so tiny and so full of mischief. It isn’t fair that she was taken so soon. Thinking of you.

Messages for Someone Whose Cat Was Their Closest Companion

For some people, especially those who live alone, older folks or anyone who’s been through a hard time, their cat was their main company. This kind of loss can be like losing a family member. Check in more than once and offer real company not just words.

How to Make Your Message About Their Cat

The messages people remember the most are the ones that sound like they were written about their cat. More than 50 million households in the U.S. have at least one cat, according to the American Pet Products Association, but every one of those cats has its own quirks. One small detail turns a nice card into one they’ll keep.

A few ideas for what to mention:

  • Their name. Always use the cat’s name. It shows you see them as an individual and not just “your pet”.
  • A funny habit. Maybe they always knocked things off tables, sitting in boxes far too small for them etc.
  • How they showed their love. Slow blinks, kneading, head bumps, sleeping on someone’s chest, bringing “gifts” to the door.
  • Their personality. Bossy, shy, cuddly, a diva, an older soul.
  • A memory you share. The first time you met them, the time they hid in your bag, the way they always ignored you except when you had food.
  • How long they were together. “Twelve years of love” says a lot in just a few words.

If you never met the cat don’t worry. You can mention something you heard about or saw in photos (“I loved all the pictures of him in his little Christmas sweater”) or just say how clear it was that they loved each other.

What Not to Say When Someone’s Cat Dies

Most hurtful comments come from people trying to help. But some things you say will cause upset no matter how kindly it is meant. It’s worth reading through what not to say to someone grieving in general but these are the ones that come up most with cat loss:

  • “It was just a cat.” To them it absolutely wasn’t. This one stings more than people realize.
  • “When are you getting another one?” A new cat isn’t a replacement. They’ll decide when (and if) they’re ready.
  • “At least it wasn’t a person.” Comparing grief never helps anyone feel better.
  • “Cats are so independent, they don’t really get attached.” Anyone who’s had a cat follow them from room to room knows that’s not true.
  • “You should have kept him inside” or “Did you not notice he was sick?” Hindsight helps nobody here and they’re already blaming themselves.
  • “I know exactly how you feel.” Even if you’ve lost a cat yourself every loss is different. Try “I remember how hard it was when I lost mine” instead.

How to Sign a Sympathy Card for the Loss of a Cat

Once you’ve written your message you still need to sign it. These closings are good for a pet sympathy card nicely. For more options see this guide on how to sign a sympathy card.

  • With love and purrs for [cat’s name]
  • Thinking of you and your sweet kitty
  • With heartfelt sympathy
  • Holding you close in my thoughts
  • Remembering [cat’s name] with you
  • With love, always
  • Forever in our hearts, [cat’s name]

A Short Verse for a Cat Sympathy Card

If you’d like to add a little verse to your card, this is one I wrote that you’re welcome to use. For more there’s a collection of pet loss poems and some lovely loss of cat quotes that work well in a card too.

A quiet paw, a gentle purr,
A sunny spot, a coat of fur,
The softest weight upon your bed,
A head bump where the hard days led.

The house is still, the window bare,
But love like that stays everywhere.
In every corner, every chair,
A little part of them is there.

Small Ways to Show You Care After a Cat Dies

A card is lovely. But if you’re close to them a small gesture can go a long way, especially in the first couple of weeks when the house feels the most empty.

  • Send something to remember them by. A framed photo, a paw print ornament or a planted tree in their memory. There are plenty of ideas in this list of pet loss gift ideas.
  • Drop off a meal. Grief makes cooking feel so hard, whether it’s for a person or a pet.
  • Offer to help with the hard bits. Some people can’t face packing up the food bowls, the litter box, scratching post etc. Offering to do it (only when they’re ready) is a wonderful gesture.
  • Remember the dates. A quick message on the cat’s birthday, adoption day or the anniversary of their passing shows you haven’t forgotten.
  • Help them say thank you. If their vet was wonderful, they may want to send a note. This guide on writing a thank you note to a veterinarian can help.
  • Let them talk. Ask about their favorite memories. Look at the photos. Laugh at the silly stories. Talking about the cat keeps them close.

If they’re thinking about holding a little memorial or writing a few words to read, the eulogy examples for a cat might help them find the right words. And if they want to let friends know there are ways to share the news in a pet death announcement.
