A celebration of life feels different from a traditional funeral. You’re still going to be missing the deceased but the day is much more about gratitude and remembering the good instead of feeling sad.
And using the right Bible verse at a celebration of life doesn’t try to explain the loss away or tie it up in a neat bow. It just gives everyone who’s there something grounding during what can be a hard time.
So we have the following verses grouped by how you’ll use them, be it a reading during the service, a short line for the memorial card or something to go with a photo in a slideshow. I’ve chosen the more hopeful, life honoring passages that fit the spirit of a celebration rather than the heavier ones. A few words of comfort are in here too because even the happiest send off has its tender moments.
One quick note before we get going. All the verses below come from the King James Version. Its in the public domain and reads well out loud which is why so many families use it. If yours prefers a modern translation like the NIV or the ESV just look up the same reference in the version you love and it’ll be there.
What Makes a Bible Verse Right for a Celebration of Life
A celebration of life is usually a little lighter than a funeral. It’s often held weeks after the passing rather than days, sometimes in a backyard or a favorite restaurant instead of a church and the point is to remember who the person was rather than mourn that they’re gone. So the verses that work best tend to do one of three things.
They are about hope and the promise of eternal life. They celebrate a life that was well lived and well loved. Or they offer some comfort to everyone who showed up.
You’re not looking to fill the room with grief. You want something that lifts people even as it acknowledges what they’ve lost.

Bible Verses About Hope and Eternal Life
John 11:25-26
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
This one carries a service. It’s the promise everything else rests on, and it reads with real weight out loud.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. There’s a defiance in this one that suits a celebration. It’s Scripture with its chin up.

A beautiful reminder that the bond didn’t break. Nothing, the verse says, and it means nothing.

The phrase “sorrow not, even as others which have no hope” is really the whole idea behind a celebration of life. You’re allowed to grieve. You’re just not grieving without hope.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
Hard to beat this for someone who lived fully and stayed true to what they believed. It reads like the last line of a good life.

A simple promise that the tears aren’t wasted and comfort is coming. Sometimes that’s all anyone needs to hear.

- Psalm 116:15 — Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
- Psalm 30:5 — Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
- 2 Corinthians 5:8 — We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
- Psalm 147:3 — He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.
- Nahum 1:7 — The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble.
- John 16:22 — Your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

That last one “the memory of the just is blessed” is my favorite little verse for the bottom of a memorial card. Six words that says everything that needs to be said.
Bible Verses About Joy and Remembrance
The word “celebration” is in the name so it feels right to have verses specifically for joy. These gives everyone at the service permission to smile.
Psalm 118:24
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
A wonderful line to open a celebration of life with. It sets the whole tone in one breath.

“Fulness of joy” is where the person is now, and that’s a comforting image to leave a room with.
Bible Verses for Strength and Peace
These verses are for a family who has to stand up front and get through the day. These verses provide a little strength.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
The peace being offered here is a different kind, the verse says. Not the flimsy kind the world hands out. That distinction matters on a hard day.

“Underneath are the everlasting arms.” However far you fall, this verse says, you land in something that holds.
Psalms for a Celebration of Life
The Psalms have carried grieving people for thousands of years, so it’s no surprise they show up at almost every service. A whole psalm makes a beautiful stand-alone reading, and Psalm 23 in particular is one that a lot of people can say along with you from memory.
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
The one everyone knows, and there’s a reason it never gets old. If you read nothing else, read this. Half the room will be quietly saying it with you.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.
“A very present help in trouble.” Present. Not somewhere off in the distance, but here in the room with all of you.
How to Use These Verses at a Celebration of Life
Once you’ve chosen the verse you’re going to use you have to decide where to put it. The following are the spots where a passage will do the most good.
As a spoken reading during the service
This is the most common way. Someone reads a psalm or a passage aloud usually between the eulogy and some music.
Pick something a little longer for this, like Psalm 23 or John 14:1-3, and use a printed copy in a large font so whoever reads it isn’t squinting at a phone.
Ask them to read it slower than feels natural. It always sounds rushed from the front.
On the printed program or order of service
A short verse across the top of the program sets the tone early on. “The memory of the just is blessed” or “This is the day which the LORD hath made” both look lovely up there.
Under the photos in a slideshow
If you’re running a photo tribute a single line of Scripture on the opening or closing slide works. Keep it to one verse so it doesn’t compete with the pictures. Revelation 21:4 or Psalm 30:5 work beautifully as a closing slide.
On the memorial or thank you card
Families often send a card afterward to everyone who came or sent flowers. A short verse inside is a nice touch. If you’re writing those notes the funeral thank you note examples will help find the right words.

You don’t have to read a verse as its own separate reading. Sometimes the best thing is to use one line in the tribute itself, right where it fits. “He fought a good fight, he finished his course” will work well at the end of a story about how the person lived.
Choosing the Right Verse
Don’t spend too long on this. The best verse for the celebration you’re planning is the one that sounds fitting for the person.
If they were joyful, choose a joyful verse. If their faith was quiet – “well done, good and faithful servant” will say more than fancier passages. If they loved the outdoors “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills” will mean something to everyone who knew them.
And you don’t need many. One reading during the service, maybe a short line on the program and you’re done.
