Some losses don’t get a funeral. A miscarriage means there’s no church or casket.
Quite often people seem not to even notice or you haven’t told them. And so a baby you loved with everything you had before you ever got to hold them is gone.
If you’re in this position you’ll probably find any kind things people say won’t help. For those I’ve known going through this the only thing that offered comfort was a few lines of a poem. Somehow the right words in the right order can say what they couldn’t.
That’s what this page is for. Below you’ll find poems for a miscarriage, stillbirth, or the loss of a baby gone far too soon.
Some are short enough to write on a card or a keepsake. Some are longer and should be read aloud at a memorial. A few are written for the mom and dad living it and a few are for the friend who loves them and has no idea what to say.

Well Known Poems About Losing a Baby
A lot of people come here looking for a specific poem they remember. Many of the best loved ones are still under copyright so I won’t reprint them in full here. But these are worth looking up in full if one sounds right for you:
- “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye — probably the most read bereavement poem of all. It imagines the one who has died living on in the wind, the snow and the morning light. It suits almost any service.
- “To Those I Love” by Isla Paschal Richardson — a short and comforting piece spoken in the voice of the one who has gone, asking those left behind not to grieve too long. Often read at memorials for a baby or child.
- “Little Snowdrop” — an anonymous verse written specifically for the loss of a baby, comparing a brief life to a flower that bloomed for only a moment.
- “An Angel in the Book of Life” — a short anonymous verse about an angel writing down a baby’s birth and then gently closing the book again.

How to Use These Poems
There’s are a few ways grieving families can use a poem like the ones above.
Read one aloud at a memorial. Even if you only have a few people reading a poem can mean a lot. If you don’t trust your own voice in the moment, and a lot of us don’t, ask a friend to read it for you. Our funeral poems has more if you need a second reading.
Write one in a card. A few lines inside a sympathy card can be much better than a long message that doesn’t say the right thing. You can use a short verse with one sentence of your own. If you want help with that sentence our miscarriage condolences guide is full of wording ideas.
Put it on a keepsake. Many parents have a few lines engraved on a small plaque, a piece of jewelry or a garden stone. The short poems near the top of this page are the right size for that.
Keep one just for you. Not every poem has to be shared. Sometimes you put it in a drawer, or as a note on your phone and have it to read it on the hard days.
A quick reminder: grief after a miscarriage or stillbirth is real grief and it doesn’t follow a schedule. Be patient with yourself.
