100+ Sympathy Messages for Loss of a Dog

If you’ve tried to find a pet sympathy card you’ll know most of them have something basic like “thinking of you” in swirly gold letters with a cartoon paw print. That may feel wrong for the dog you’re offering your condolences about.

A good sympathy message for the loss of a dog doesn’t need to be particularly clever or poetic. It needs to show that you knew that dog mattered to the owner grieving.

And around 68 million US households own a dog so chances are you’ll need to write one of these more than once.

Below you’ll find over 100 sympathy messages for the loss of a dog sorted by who you’re writing to and what happened so you can find something that fits your circumstances.

Before You Write: Things That Make the Biggest Difference

The best dog sympathy cards all do the following:

  • They use the dog’s name. “Sorry about your dog” and “I’m so sorry about Biscuit” are very different. You should always use the name when you can.
  • They mention one specific detail. It could be the way she leaned on your legs. Or the time she stole a sandwich at the Fourth of July cookout. The tennis ball he would never want to give back. One memory like that is a lot better than lots of words that don’t really say much.
  • They treat it as a real loss. Grief experts often call pet loss a kind of “disenfranchised grief” which is just a fancy way of saying people don’t always feel allowed to mourn it.

If you’re looking for spoken words for when you see them face to face we’ve covered that separately in what to say to someone whose dog died. Below is all about the written stuff: cards, notes and texts.

Euthanasia is often the part people struggle with most. Many owners feel guilty, even when it was clearly the kind thing to do. Reassuring them about the decision can mean a lot here. We have a guide on what to say when someone euthanizes their pet if you’d like more help with this one.

Sympathy Messages for a Child Who Lost Their Dog

For a lot of kids losing the family dog is their first real experience of death. A card addressed to them directly (rather than the parents) can make them feel seen. Use simple words and avoid phrases like “went to sleep” which can confuse or even scare younger children.

  • I’m so sorry ______ died. He loved you so much and you were the best friend he ever had.
  • It’s okay to feel sad and it’s okay to cry. ______ was lucky to have a friend like you.

  • Maybe you could draw a picture of your favorite day with ______. I’d love to see it if you want to share.
  • Your dog was a really good dog. I’m sorry you’re so sad. Big hugs from me.

Sympathy Text Messages for Loss of a Dog

A text is completely fine for a dog loss, especially as a first message when you’ve just heard the news. You can always follow up with a card later. Keep it short and don’t expect a reply. If you want more ideas try our guide on how to offer condolences via text.

  • Just heard about ______. I’m so sorry. No need to reply, just wanted you to know I’m thinking of you.
  • Oh no, I’m so sorry about ______. Sending you the biggest hug.
  • So sorry about your sweet pup. Want me to drop off dinner tonight?
  • Thinking about you and ______ today. Here if you want to talk or just vent.

  • Checking in on you. I know the first week is the hardest. Missing ______ with you.

Rainbow Bridge Sympathy Messages

The Rainbow Bridge idea comes from a much loved prose poem about pets waiting for their owners in a green meadow. Not everyone connects with it so only use these if you know the person finds it comforting.

  • Run free over the Rainbow Bridge, ______. Your family will see you again one day.
  • I like to think ______ is running through green fields right now, waiting by the bridge for you.

  • ______ has crossed the bridge, but the paw prints he left on your heart aren’t going anywhere.

Belated Sympathy Messages for Loss of a Dog

  • I only just heard about ______ and I’m so sorry. I hope you’re doing okay. Thinking of you.
  • I know this card is late, but I didn’t want another day to pass without telling you how sorry I am about ______.
  • It’s been a few weeks, and I know it might feel like everyone has moved on. I haven’t forgotten ______. Sending love.

  • I imagine the quiet in your house is still hard. Just wanted you to know I’m still thinking of you and ______.

Longer Sympathy Card Examples for Loss of a Dog

If you’re writing a letter or a bigger card these longer examples might help you with writing the message. Change the details so they fit the dog you’re writing about.

Dear Jen,

I was so sorry to hear about Murphy. I know he’d been slowing down, but I don’t think anything prepares you for the day the house goes quiet.

I’ll always remember Murphy for the way he carried that ratty stuffed duck around like it was made of gold, and how he’d bring it to every new visitor as a welcome gift. He was such a gentle soul.

You gave him a wonderful life, Jen. Fourteen years of walks, beach days and so much love. He was a lucky dog.

I’m thinking of you and I’ll call this weekend. If you want company for a walk, I’m in.

With love,
Sarah

Dear Tom and Michelle,

We were heartbroken to hear about Daisy. She was taken from you far too soon, and I can only imagine how much you’re hurting.

Daisy was pure sunshine. Every time we came over she’d wiggle so hard her whole back end went sideways. The kids still talk about the time she “helped” with the vegetable garden.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything at all we can do. We’ve left a lasagna in your freezer, so that’s one less thing to think about this week.

Thinking of you both,
The Garcia Family

Dear Mr. Patterson,

I just wanted to write and say how sorry I am about Duke. I’ve walked past your house every morning for six years and Duke was always there at the fence to say hello. My morning walk won’t be the same without him.

He was clearly very loved. I’m thinking of you.

Warmly,
Ellen (from down the street)

A Short Verse for a Dog Sympathy Card

Some people like to add a few lines of verse at the bottom of a card. I wrote this one for anyone who wants something simple and original to use. For many more see our collection of pet loss poems.

The Empty Spot by the Door

There’s an empty spot beside the door
Where a faithful friend would wait,
A leash that hangs, a quiet floor,
No tail to greet you at the gate.

But love like his won’t fade away
Or leave with one last sigh.
He’s in the light of every day
And every walk you’re passing by.

By Sympathy Message Ideas

If you’d rather include a short quote there are lots to choose from in our loss of dog quotes.

How to Sign a Dog Sympathy Card

The sign off is easy to overthink. Just go with something that fits with how close you are.

  • With love and sympathy
  • Thinking of you and ______
  • Missing ______ with you
  • With heartfelt sympathy
  • Sending love and dog hugs
  • Forever a good boy/girl
  • With warm thoughts
  • Love from all of us (and a sniff from Max)

That last one is for when you have a dog of your own who knew theirs. It’s only a small touch but people really do love it.

What Not to Write in a Dog Sympathy Card

Most people mean well but there are a few phrases that can be offensive or upsetting. For a bigger list see what not to say to someone grieving.

  • “It was just a dog.” Nobody writes this on purpose but phrases like “at least it was only a pet” do the same damage.
  • “When are you getting another one?” A new dog is not a replacement. Let them bring that up in their own time.
  • “I know exactly how you feel.” Even if you’ve lost a dog too, their bond was their own. “I remember how much it hurt when I lost Bailey” is better.
  • “Everything happens for a reason.” It rarely comforts anyone, especially after a sudden or young loss.
  • Questions about how it happened. If they want to tell you, they will.
  • Blame, even hidden blame. Anything like “if only you’d caught it sooner” has no place in a card.

Small Gestures That Go Well With the Card

You don’t have to send anything other than a card. But if you’d like to do a little more these are the gestures I’ve seen mean the most:

  • A framed photo of the dog, especially one they might not have seen
  • A donation in the dog’s name to a local shelter or rescue
  • A meal dropped off so they don’t have to think about cooking
  • A small plant or tree they can put in the yard in the dog’s memory
  • A paw print keepsake or engraved ornament

We’ve put together more ideas in our guide to pet loss gift ideas. And if the family is planning a small memorial and wants to say a few words our eulogy examples for a dog can help with that.
