60+ Prayers for the Loss of a Father: Comfort and Peace

Losing a father leaves you feeling lost and hurt. And prayer is one of the oldest ways people have of coping with that loss.

Pew Research found that about 44% of American adults pray every day and roughly two thirds pray at least once a month. So if you’re reaching for a prayer right now you’re one of many.

Below you’ll find prayers for the loss of a father for nearly every moment you might need one. Short ones for a card or a text. Longer ones for the long nights. Prayers for his soul, prayers of thanks, prayers for a sudden loss or the end of a long illness, prayers for when your relationship with him was complicated and a handful of traditional prayers and Bible verses too. Use them word for word or change them so they sound like your dad.

Short Prayers for the Loss of a Father

Sometimes you only have an energy for a short prayer. These short prayers for a father who has died work for a quiet moment, the inside of a sympathy card for the loss of a father or a message to a friend.

  • Lord, hold my dad close tonight, and hold me too.
  • Thank you, God, for the gift of my father. Keep him safe until we meet again.
  • Give my father rest, Lord, and give me the strength to keep going without him.
  • Heavenly Father, please take care of my earthly one.
  • God, I don’t have the words. You know what’s in my heart. Please carry it to Dad.
  • Lord, let my father’s love keep living in the way I treat others.
  • May my dad finally be at peace, free from pain and wrapped in Your love. Amen.
  • God, comfort every heart that is missing him today.
  • Lord, he walked beside me for so long. Please walk beside me now.
  • Into Your hands, Lord, I place my father. I know he is safe there.

Prayers for Comfort When Your Dad Has Died

The first few weeks after a father dies can feel awful. You go through the motions, sign the papers, answer the phone and somehow keep going. These prayers are for when the weight of it lands all at once. I’ve noticed that grief often hits you the hardest in the ordinary moments.

Dear Lord, my heart is broken and I don’t know how to put it back together. My father was my steady place, the one I called when everything fell apart. Now I’m the one falling apart and he isn’t here to call. Please be my steady place now. Wrap me in Your comfort when the house is too quiet and the memories are too loud. Remind me that I am not alone, even when it feels like it. Amen.

******************

God of all comfort, I come to You tired and hurting. I miss my dad more than I thought it was possible to miss someone. Help me through each day, one hour at a time if that’s all I can manage. When I reach for the phone to call him, let me reach for You instead. Hold the pieces of my heart until I’m ready to pick them up again. Amen.

******************

Lord, they say You are close to the brokenhearted. I need You close right now. My father’s chair is empty and so is something inside me. Please fill the space with Your peace, not to replace him, because nothing could, but so I can bear the ache of missing him. Give me rest when I can’t sleep and hope when I can’t see past today. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, I lost my father and I feel like a child again, small and scared and not sure where to go. Thank You for being a Father who never leaves. Comfort me the way he used to when I was little, with patience and a steady hand on my shoulder. Let me feel Your arms around me today. Amen.

******************

God, I am grateful for every person who has shown up with food, a card or a hug. But when they go home, the grief is still here. Be with me in the late hours when it is just me and the memories. Let those memories become a comfort instead of a wound. And please let my dad know how much he is missed. Amen.

Prayers for Your Father’s Soul and Eternal Rest

Many people find comfort in praying for the soul of the person they’ve lost, trusting that he is at peace and in God’s care. These prayers for a deceased father are about his rest, his reward and the hope of being together again. If you want even more there’s a bigger collection of prayers for the dead on the site too.

Lord God, I commend my father’s soul to You. He was a good man, not a perfect one, but You know his heart better than any of us ever could. Forgive whatever needs forgiving and welcome him home with the love he gave so freely here. Grant him eternal rest and let him know peace that never ends. Amen.

******************

Merciful God, my father has finished his journey on this earth. Thank You for every year You gave him. Receive him now into the place You have prepared, where there is no more pain, no more worry and no more tears. Let him rest in Your perfect peace until the day we are together again. Amen.

******************

Father in heaven, I place my dad in Your care. His body was tired and his work is done. Let his soul find the rest it deserves. Surround him with those who went before him, his parents and friends and everyone he missed. Let them laugh together again the way he always loved to laugh. Amen.

******************

Lord, my dad believed in You and trusted You with his life. Now I trust You with his soul. Keep him safe in Your house of many rooms. Let perpetual light shine on him and give me the faith to believe I will see his face again. Amen.

Prayers of Thanks for the Father You Had

Gratitude doesn’t make grief go away but it can feel right to be thankful for what you had. Some of the most healing prayers I’ve come across are simple thank you notes to God for the dad who raised you. If you’re putting together a tribute these go well with our tribute messages for a father.

Thank You, God, for my father. Thank You for the early mornings he worked so we could have what we needed. Thank You for the lessons he taught me, the ones he said out loud and the ones he simply lived. Thank You for his laugh, his stubbornness and the way he always knew when something was wrong. I was blessed to call him Dad. Amen.

******************

Lord, I could spend the rest of my life thanking You for the man You gave me as a father and still not finish. He showed me what it means to keep a promise, to show up and to love without making a fuss about it. Help me honor him by carrying those things forward. Amen.

******************

Gracious God, thank You for every ball game, every bad dad joke, every ride to practice and every quiet talk on the back porch. I didn’t always say thank you to him. Please let him know now how grateful I am. Amen.

******************

God, as much as it hurts, I am thankful the pain is this deep. It means the love was deep too. Thank You for a father worth missing this much. Amen.

Prayers for the Sudden Loss of a Father

When a dad dies without warning there’s no chance to say goodbye, no last conversation and often a lot of unanswered questions. The shock can make it hard to pray at all. These prayers leave room for that. Our guide on what to say when someone dies unexpectedly may help if you’re supporting someone else through a sudden loss.

Lord, I wasn’t ready. Yesterday he was here and today he’s gone, and I can’t make sense of it. I’m angry and confused and I don’t know what to ask for, so I’m asking for You. Stay with me in the shock. Please let my father know the things I never got to say. Amen.

******************

God, there was no goodbye. No last hug, no last “love you, kid.” Please tell him for me. Tell him I loved him and I’m sorry for every time I was too busy to call. Help me forgive myself for the things I didn’t know I’d run out of time to do. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, my family is reeling. Help us hold each other up. Give us patience with one another when grief makes us short-tempered. Give us clear heads for all the decisions we never expected to make so soon. And give my dad the peace that came to him so suddenly. Amen.

Prayers After a Long Illness

Losing a father after months or years of illness can result in a mix of grief, relief, exhaustion and sometimes guilt about the relief. If you were a caregiver, your whole daily routine has disappeared overnight. I think these prayers are some of the most honest in this whole collection because they say the quiet parts out loud.

Lord, thank You that my father isn’t suffering anymore. I watched him fight for so long and I prayed so many times for healing. I know now that healing came in a different way than I hoped. Help me let go of the hospital rooms and the hard nights, and remember the man he was before he got sick. Amen.

******************

God, I feel relieved and then I feel terrible for feeling relieved. Please help me understand that both things can be true. I loved my dad and I’m glad his pain is over. Take away my guilt and give me rest. I am so tired. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, bless every nurse, aide and hospice worker who cared for my dad with such kindness. They became part of our story. Give them strength for the next family who needs them. And give my father the rest he waited so long for. Amen.

Prayers When Your Relationship With Your Dad Was Complicated

Not every father was easy to love. Some dads were absent, some were hurtful and some were only starting to make things right when time ran out. Grief after a complicated relationship can be confusing and you’re allowed to pray about that too. You can find more on this in our post on the loss of an estranged parent.

God, I don’t know how to grieve someone who hurt me. Part of me is sad and part of me is numb and part of me is still angry. Please hold all of those parts without asking me to choose. Help me grieve the father I had and the father I wished I’d had. Amen.

******************

Lord, we never fixed it. There were words we never said and a distance we never closed. I’m leaving that unfinished business in Your hands because I can’t carry it anymore. Do with it what I could not. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, help me forgive my dad, not because what happened was okay, but because I don’t want to carry this into the rest of my life. And if there’s anything I need forgiving for too, please forgive me. Let us both have peace. Amen.

Prayers for a Daughter Who Lost Her Father

There’s a reason so many women describe losing their dad as losing their first protector. These prayers are written from a daughter’s point of view though anyone can use them.

Lord, I was always his little girl, even as a grown woman with a family of my own. I don’t know who I am without him in the world. Remind me that he’s still part of me, in my stubborn streak and my laugh and the way I check the locks twice. Help me carry him with me. Amen.

******************

God, he won’t walk me down the aisle. He won’t meet my children or watch them grow. That loss feels unbearable today. Let him watch from heaven, and let me feel his pride on all the days I wish he could be standing beside me. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, my dad made me feel safe in a way no one else could. Now I need You to be my safe place. Hold me the way he did when I was small and scared of the dark. Amen.

Prayers for a Son Who Lost His Father

Sons often feel pressure to hold it together after their dad dies, to be the strong one or to step straight into his shoes. These prayers will help you to just grieve.

Lord, everybody keeps telling me I’m the man of the family now. I don’t feel ready for that. I just want my dad back. Give me the strength to carry what I need to carry and the humility to ask for help when I can’t. Amen.

******************

God, my father taught me how to work hard, fix things and keep my word. Help me be half the man he was. And when I fall short, which I will, remind me he didn’t expect me to be perfect. He just expected me to try. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, I didn’t cry at the funeral because I felt like I had to hold it together. But I’m crying now. Thank You for being someone I don’t have to be strong in front of. Take this grief from me a little at a time. Amen.

Prayers for Someone Who Lost Their Father

If a friend, coworker or family member has lost their dad, a short prayer can mean more than you’d expect. Just make sure they’re someone who’d welcome it. For people who aren’t religious our ideas on what to say instead of “you’re in my thoughts and prayers” might suit better. These work in a card, a text or said quietly on their behalf.

  • I’m praying God gives you peace and surrounds you with people who loved your dad as much as you did.
  • Lord, comfort my friend in the loss of her father and fill her days with good memories of him.
  • Praying for you and your family as you say goodbye to your dad. May his memory be a blessing.
  • God, give him strength for the hard days ahead and rest when grief wears him out.
  • I asked God to wrap your whole family in His love this week. Your dad was a wonderful man.
  • Praying that the love your father gave you carries you through this. I’m here if you need anything.

You’ll find lots more in our posts on sympathy prayers and Christian condolence messages.

Prayers to Read at Your Father’s Funeral

If you’ve been asked to say a prayer at your dad’s service keep a minute or two is plenty. These are written to be read aloud and they sit well alongside a reading from our funeral poems for dad or a few words from one of these eulogy examples for a father. There’s also a broader set of funeral prayers if you need something for another part of the service.

Loving God, we gather today with heavy hearts to say goodbye to a father, a grandfather, a husband and a friend. We thank You for his life and for the many ways he made our lives better. Comfort everyone in this room who is grieving. Help us carry his kindness and his strength into the world, so that a little of him goes on in each of us. Receive him now into Your peace. Amen.

******************

Lord, today we remember [Name]. We remember his hands that worked hard, his voice that told the best and worst stories and his heart that loved this family without condition. We give him back to You with gratitude for every year we had. Hold us close in our sorrow and give us hope that this is not the end. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, we come before You as his children, his family and his friends. We are sad, but we are not without hope. Thank You for lending him to us. Grant him eternal rest, and grant us the grace to live in a way that would make him proud. In Your name we pray. Amen.

Prayers for Father’s Day, His Birthday and the Anniversary

The calendar can be cruel after a dad dies. Father’s Day ads start showing up in May, his birthday comes around and then there’s the date he passed. A prayer can help you mark those days instead of just dreading them. You might also find something for his birthday in our happy birthday in heaven messages or for the anniversary in these death anniversary quotes.

Lord, it’s Father’s Day and the world is celebrating dads. I’m celebrating mine too, just from a distance now. Thank You for the father I had. Please give him my love today, and help me spend the day in a way that honors him instead of hiding from it. Amen.

******************

God, today would have been Dad’s birthday. I keep thinking about the cake he’d pretend he didn’t want and the card I’d have mailed late. Let him celebrate with You today. And let me smile at the memories, even if I cry too. Amen.

******************

Heavenly Father, it has been a year (or five or twenty) since my father died. The grief is quieter now but it’s still here. Thank You for carrying me this far. Keep his memory alive in our family and help us tell his stories to the ones who never got to meet him. Amen.

Traditional Prayers and Bible Verses for the Loss of a Father

Sometimes the old words say it best especially when your own words have run dry. These traditional prayers and verses (all from the King James Version) have comforted grieving families for centuries. For more scripture take a look at our Bible verses about loss.

Eternal Rest

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 121

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

John 14:1-3

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Short Verses for a Card

  • “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4
  • “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.” Psalm 34:18
  • “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Psalm 30:5
  • “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

Words If You’re Not Religious

Not everyone who is grieving prays in the traditional sense but plenty of people still want words to say into the quiet.

Dad, wherever you are, I hope you’re at peace. I hope you know how much you were loved and how much you still are. I’ll keep telling your stories. I’ll keep making your chili, badly. I’ll keep you with me.

******************

I am grateful for the years I had with my father. I let myself feel this grief because it is the shape of my love. I will carry his best parts forward and let the rest go. I will be gentle with myself today.

How to Pray When You Can’t Find the Words

A lot of people feel like they’re “doing it wrong” when they try to pray after a loss. A few things that seem to help:

  • Keep it short. A single sentence counts. “Help” counts.
  • Use his name. Saying your dad’s name out loud in a prayer can feel surprisingly good after weeks of people tiptoeing around it.
  • Borrow words. Read one of the prayers above or a psalm and let it speak for you on the days you can’t.
  • Write it down. Some people find it easier to write a prayer as a letter to God or even a letter to their dad.
  • Pray where he was. His workbench, the porch, his favorite fishing spot, the cemetery. Place can unlock words that won’t come at the kitchen table.
  • Let it be honest. Anger and doubt are allowed in prayer. The Psalms are full of both.

If the grief starts to feel too heavy to carry, please talk to someone, whether that’s a pastor, a grief counselor or a friend who knew your dad. Prayer and support go well together.

A Prayer Poem for Dad

I wrote this one for anyone who wants something a little more personal to read at a graveside, print inside a memorial card or just keep by the bed.

Lord, You gave me a father
who taught me how to stand,
who steadied every wobble
with one strong, patient hand.

He worked from dawn to evening
and never asked for praise,
he showed me how to love You
in plain and quiet ways.

Now take him home, I pray You,
and let his labor cease.
Give him a chair beside You,
a porch, a view, some peace.

And when I miss him, Father,
which will be every day,
remind me that the love he gave
will never pass away.

Sally, Sympathy Message Ideas

Losing your dad changes your world. There’s no prayer that makes that go away but I do think there’s something in saying the words that helps you feel a little less alone with it.

I hope one of these prayers for the loss of a father gives you the words you needed today. And if you’re looking for more ways to remember him you might find comfort in these loss of father quotes or our I miss you dad quotes. And if your family is grieving more than one parent these prayers for the loss of a mother were written in the same spirit.
