When someone you know loses a child knowing what to say can be so fraught. Many parents find praying can help in such a tragic time.
But for many of us finding the words for a prayer, especially without preparing first, is very hard. But those grieving appreciate it when they don’t have to say the prayer themselves. Which means it falls to us.
That’s really why I’ve put these prayers for the loss of a child together. Some are for grieving parents to pray on their own. Others are for friends and family who want to pray for a mother or father who has lost a son or daughter. And some are short enough to write in a sympathy card or send in a text when you just want them to know you’re holding them up.
Use them word for word or change them however you need to. Add the child’s name. Cut out the bits that aren’t right. There’s no wrong way to pray when your heart is broken.
Before You Use These Prayers
A couple of things to keep in mind before you take these prayers to those grieving:
- Say the child’s name. So many parents tell me the thing they fear most is that people will stop saying their child’s name. A prayer that includes it is going to be so important to them.
- Ask before praying out loud with someone. Some parents find huge comfort in prayer. But some are furious with God right now. A simple “Would it help if I said a prayer?” is enough.
- Keep it short if you’re unsure. A thirty second prayer said with love is better than something long you read off your phone.
- Don’t use prayer to explain the loss. Lines like “God needed another angel” or “everything happens for a reason” can really hurt a parent. Pray for comfort and strength instead of trying to make sense of it. Our guide on what not to say to someone grieving goes into this more.
Prayers for Grieving Parents
These are prayers a mother or father can pray for themselves. I’ve written them in the first person so you can say them as your own. If you’re praying for someone else just swap “I” for “they” or use their names.
Lord, I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to wake up tomorrow and live in a world where my child isn’t. Every part of me hurts. Please hold me when I can’t hold myself together. Sit with me in this darkness and don’t let go of me, even when I want to let go of everything. Give me enough strength for the next hour and then the hour after that. That’s all I can ask for right now. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, you gave me [name] and I loved them with everything I had. I still do. I always will. Thank you for every single day I had with them, even the hard ones, even the ordinary ones I didn’t think twice about. Now I’m asking you to take care of them for me until I can hold them again. And please take care of me too, because I am not okay. Amen.
******************
God of all comfort, the house is so quiet. Their room is just as they left it and I can’t bring myself to go in or to leave it alone. Meet me in this silence. When the grief comes in waves please be the ground under my feet. When people stop asking how I am please remind me that you never stop. Amen.
******************
Lord, I am so tired. Tired from crying, tired from not sleeping, tired from pretending to be fine for everyone else. Let me rest in you. Let me be weak without feeling ashamed. Carry what I can’t carry and help me to accept help from the people around me. Amen.
******************
Father, my heart is in pieces and I don’t think it will ever be whole again. I’m not asking you to take the pain away because the pain is how much I loved them. I’m asking you to help me carry it. Help me find small moments of peace. A memory that makes me smile instead of cry. A good night’s sleep. A friend who says the right thing. Let those small mercies be enough to get me through today. Amen.
Prayers for a Mother Who Lost a Child
I don’t think there’s a word for what a mother feels when she loses her baby, whatever their age. These prayers can be prayed by a mom herself or by anyone who wants to lift her up.
Lord, you know a mother’s heart because you made it. You know how she carried this child, fed them, worried over them and loved them before they ever took a breath. Now she has to carry this grief and it is too heavy. Wrap your arms around her. Let her feel your presence in the long nights. When her arms ache to hold her child please hold her instead. Amen.
******************
God, I was supposed to protect them. That was my job. And now they’re gone and I keep asking what I missed and what I should have done differently. Please quiet those questions in me. Take the guilt that isn’t mine to carry. Remind me that I was a good mother and that my love for my child was real and enough. Amen.
******************
Father, please be close to [mother’s name] today. She has lost the child she would have given her own life for. Give her rest when she can’t sleep. Send people to her door with food and hugs and no expectations. Let her cry as much as she needs to and laugh again when she’s ready without feeling guilty. And let her know her child is safe with you. Amen.
******************
Lord, I am still a mother. Even though my child isn’t here in my arms I will always be their mom. Help other people understand that. Help me to answer “how many children do you have?” without falling apart. And when I need to fall apart, let me do it safely in your care. Amen.
Prayers for a Father Who Lost a Child
Dads often get forgotten in child loss. People ask him how his wife is doing and forget to ask about him. A friend’s husband told me once that he grieved in the garage because he felt he had to stay strong in the house. These prayers are for fathers like him.
Lord, I’m supposed to be the strong one but I don’t feel strong. I feel broken. Let me grieve my child without hiding it. Give me the strength to hold my family together and the permission to fall apart when I need to. Help me lean on you and on the people who love me. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, you know what it means to lose a son. You understand this pain in a way nobody else does. Please be close to [father’s name] as he mourns [child’s name]. Give him people he can talk to honestly. Give him moments of peace in the middle of the noise. And remind him that being a good father didn’t end when his child died. Amen.
******************
God, I keep thinking of all the things I’ll never get to do with my child. The games, the advice, the walks, the milestones. I wanted to teach them so much. Help me hold onto what we did have instead of drowning in what we lost. Help me honor them by how I live from now on. Amen.
Prayers for When You’re Angry at God or Can’t Pray
I want to include these because nobody talks about them enough. Lots of faithful people find they can’t pray at all after losing a child or that every prayer comes out as anger.
Even Pope Francis, when he dedicated his November 2024 prayer intention to parents who have lost a child, said that asking God “why” can itself be a way of praying. So if that’s what you’re feeling you’re in good company.
God, I am so angry with you. I don’t understand how you could let this happen. I begged you and my child still died. I don’t even know if I want to talk to you right now. But I’m here. That’s all I’ve got. If you’re listening, please don’t give up on me while I can’t find my way back to you. Amen.
******************
Lord, I have no words. I’ve tried to pray and nothing comes. So I’m just going to sit here and let you see my heart. You know what I’m feeling better than I do. Please hear what I can’t say. Amen.
******************
Why? That’s my whole prayer today. Why my child? Why now? I know you may never answer me in this life. Help me live with the question. And if you can’t take the anger away then at least stay with me while I’m angry. Amen.
******************
Father, I used to pray so easily. Now my faith feels like it’s hanging by a thread. Hold onto me, because I can’t hold onto you right now. Amen.
Prayers for the Loss of a Son
Lord, my son was my whole heart. His laugh, his stubbornness, the way he’d walk into the kitchen and eat everything in sight. I miss every bit of him. Please keep him safe in your care. Tell him his mom and dad love him and always will. And help us to keep his memory alive in everything we do. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, we lift up [name] to you today. He was a son, a brother, a friend and a light to so many people. He left this world far too soon. Welcome him home with open arms. Comfort his parents who are lost without him and give them the hope of seeing him again one day. Amen.
******************
God, you gave your own son so you understand a parent’s grief better than anyone. Please wrap [parents’ names] in your love as they mourn their boy. When they think of him let the good memories come first. When they cry let them feel you close. Amen.
If you want words to go alongside a prayer our loss of son quotes has some lovely short lines that work well in a card.
Prayers for the Loss of a Daughter
Lord, my daughter was sunshine. She made every room brighter and now everything feels gray. Hold her close for me. Let her know how proud I am of the person she was. And on the days I can’t stop crying please send me a reminder of her, a song or a butterfly or a memory that makes me smile. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, we pray for [name] who has gone home to you. She was loved so deeply by her family and friends. Thank you for the gift of her life and for all the joy she brought. Comfort her parents, her siblings and everyone whose heart is aching today. Let her memory be a blessing. Amen.
******************
God, I had so many dreams for my girl. Her graduation, her wedding, maybe grandchildren. Now those dreams are gone and I’m grieving them too. Help me let go of the future I imagined without letting go of her. Amen.
You’ll find more comforting words in our posts on sympathy messages for loss of a daughter and loss of daughter quotes.
Prayers for the Loss of an Adult Child
People sometimes forget that losing a grown son or daughter is still losing your child. Parents of adult children find their grief gets overlooked because their child was “grown up”. It doesn’t matter if they were 4 or 44. They were still your baby.
Lord, they were all grown up but they were still my child. I still remember holding them when they were tiny. I still worried about them every single day. Help people understand that I’ve lost my baby, no matter their age. And please comfort their spouse and children too, who have lost so much. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, we pray for [name] who has died, and for their parents who never expected to outlive them. It goes against everything that feels natural. Give these parents strength as they also try to support grandchildren and in-laws through this loss. Let them be cared for as much as they care for others. Amen.
Prayers for the Sudden Loss of a Child
An accident, an illness that came out of nowhere, a phone call nobody should ever get. When a child dies suddenly there’s no time to say goodbye and the shock can last for months. If you’re supporting someone through this our guide on what to say to someone who lost a child suddenly might help too.
Lord, this morning everything was normal. Tonight my whole world is gone. I can’t take it in. I keep waiting for them to walk through the door. Please hold me in this shock. Help me breathe. Help me get through the next phone call, the next decision, the next minute. I can’t do this without you. Amen.
******************
God, we didn’t get to say goodbye. We didn’t get to tell them one last time how much we loved them. Please tell them for us. Let them know they were loved every single day of their life. And give us peace about all the words we never got to say. Amen.
******************
Father, please surround this family with your peace that goes beyond understanding. They are in shock and nothing makes sense. Send them people who will just show up, sit with them and help with the practical things. Guard their minds from replaying the worst moments over and over. Amen.
Prayers After the Loss of a Baby
Losing a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth or in the days and weeks after birth is a loss that so often happens in silence. Parents grieve a whole lifetime they were already picturing. These prayers can be used for any of these losses. We also have a separate post on miscarriage condolences if you’re looking for what to say.
Lord, we only had a little time with our baby but we loved them with our whole hearts. They were real. They mattered. Please hold our little one in your arms until we can. And help us through the empty days when we should have been bringing them home. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, I never got to hear my baby cry or watch them grow. My arms feel so empty. Comfort me when I see other mothers with their babies and feel that stab of grief. Let me know my child is safe with you and that I will always be their mother. Amen.
******************
God, we pray for [parents’ names] as they grieve [baby’s name]. Many people won’t understand how deep this loss goes. Let them feel seen and supported. Give them space to grieve as long as they need and the courage to talk about their baby whenever they want to. Amen.
Prayers for the Soul of a Child Who Has Died
Many families find comfort in praying for their child’s soul and their peace in heaven. You’ll find more prayers like these in our post on prayers for the dead.
Lord, we commend [name] into your loving hands. Thank you for the gift of their life, however short it was. Welcome them into your kingdom where there is no more pain or sickness or tears. Let them run and laugh and play in your presence. Grant them eternal rest and perfect peace. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, you said to let the little children come to you. So we bring [name] to you now. Hold them close and keep them safe. Surround them with your light and love. And one day, in your time, bring us all together again. Amen.
******************
This is a traditional prayer that has been said for the departed for centuries. It’s short enough to say at a graveside or bedside and you can change “them” to “him” or “her”:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Prayers for Siblings and the Whole Family
When a child dies brothers and sisters can feel invisible. They’ve lost a sibling and in some ways they’ve lost their parents for a while too because mom and dad are so consumed by grief. Grandparents grieve twice, for their grandchild and for their own child’s pain. These prayers are for the whole family.
Lord, please be with [sibling’s name] who has lost their brother. They’re confused and hurting and don’t always know how to say it. Help the adults around them notice when they’re struggling. Let them know it’s okay to be sad and okay to still have fun. And let them always feel loved. Amen.
******************
Heavenly Father, we pray for the grandparents who are grieving their precious grandchild while watching their own son or daughter suffer. Their hearts are breaking twice over. Give them strength to support their family and the space to grieve for themselves too. Amen.
******************
God, this family has been shattered. Please hold them together. Help them be patient with each other because everyone grieves differently. Protect the marriage of these parents when the strain feels too much. Let them find their way back to each other and to joy, one small step at a time. Amen.

And if you’re worried that “you’re in my thoughts and prayers” sounds a bit flat, you’re not alone. It’s the most read post on this whole site. Try our list of what to say instead of “you’re in my thoughts and prayers”.
Prayers for a Child’s Funeral
A child’s funeral is one of the hardest services anyone will ever attend or lead. These prayers can be read by a pastor, a family member or a friend. For more options take a look at our collection of funeral prayers, and if you’ve been asked to speak these child eulogy examples may help.
Opening prayer: Gracious God, we gather here with heavy hearts to remember [name] and to give thanks for their life. We come with our tears, our questions and our love. Meet us here. Comfort this family in their unbearable grief. Help us to hold each other up today and in the days ahead. Amen.
******************
Prayer of thanksgiving: Lord, thank you for [name]. Thank you for their smile, their kindness, their silly jokes and the way they made us all better people. Thank you for every moment we were given with them. We would have wanted so many more, but we’re grateful for every one we had. Amen.
******************
Closing prayer: Heavenly Father, as we leave this place we ask you to go with this family. When the flowers fade and the visitors stop coming, stay with them. Give them friends who remember. Give them peace in the night. And keep [name] safe in your love until the day we are reunited. Amen.
Prayers for Anniversaries, Birthdays and Holidays
The first birthday without them. The first Christmas. The anniversary of the day they died. These dates can be so hard even years later, so a prayer or a message on those days means so much. You might also find our posts on death anniversary quotes and happy birthday in heaven messages helpful.
Lord, today would have been [name]’s birthday. They should be blowing out candles and opening presents. Instead there’s a hole where they should be. Be with me today. Help me celebrate the day they came into my life even as I grieve that they’re gone. Tell them happy birthday from me. Amen.
******************
God, it’s been a year. Some people think I should be “better” by now. I’m not. I miss them more than ever. Thank you for getting me through this year when I didn’t think I’d survive the first week. Please carry me through the next one too. Amen.
******************
Father, everyone around me is celebrating and I just want the holidays to be over. There’s an empty chair at the table. Give me grace to be gentle with myself. Let me join in when I can and step away when I need to without guilt. And help my family make space for [name] in our traditions. Amen.
Bible Verses to Pray After Losing a Child
Sometimes when your own words won’t come scripture can say it for you. Many parents read these verses slowly and turn them into a prayer or write one inside a card. These are from the King James Version. There are lots more in our posts on Bible verses about loss and comforting Bible verses.
- Psalm 34:18 “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
- Psalm 147:3 “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
- Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
- Isaiah 40:11 “He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.”
- Mark 10:14 “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.”
- 2 Samuel 12:23 “But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”
- Jeremiah 31:15 “A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.”
- John 14:1-2 “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
- Revelation 21:4 “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
The verse from 2 Samuel is King David speaking after the death of his infant son. A lot of parents love that last line, “I shall go to him” as a promise that they will see their child again.
And I included Jeremiah because I think it’s important for grieving parents to know the Bible doesn’t hide this kind of sorrow. Rachel refused to be comforted. Sometimes we can’t be comforted either.
A Prayer Poem for a Child Gone Too Soon
Hold Them Gently
by Sally, Sympathy Message Ideas
Lord, hold them gently, the way I used to,
when they were small and the night was long.
Brush back their hair the way I’d do,
and hum to them my old sleep song.
Tell them I’m sorry for the things undone,
the words I meant to say tomorrow.
Tell them they were my rising sun
and they’re the reason for this sorrow.
And Lord, hold me too, because I’m falling,
I don’t know how to live like this.
When I hear their laughter calling
let it feel more like a kiss.
Keep them safe until I’m coming,
keep the light on, leave the door.
I’ll know the way. I’ll come running.
And I won’t let go anymore.
How to Pray For Someone Who Has Lost a Child
If you’re a friend, relative or church member wanting to pray for a grieving parent remember this:
- Tell them you’re praying and be specific. “I prayed you’d sleep last night” means more than “you’re in my prayers.” It shows you actually did it and thought about what they need.
- Keep praying long after the funeral. The cards and calls stop after a few weeks. The grief doesn’t. Set a reminder on your phone for the one month, six month and one year marks, plus their child’s birthday.
- Offer to pray with them, not at them. Ask first. Some parents want to hold hands and pray together. Others need you to pray quietly on your own and just bring dinner.
- Pair your prayers with practical help. Pray for them and also mow their lawn, pick up their other kids from school or drop off groceries. Prayer and action go hand in hand.
- Don’t stop saying their child’s name. Include it when you pray with them. Mention it in your messages. It tells them their child is not forgotten.
There’s more on this in our guide to supporting someone who’s grieving. And if the parent you’re praying for is struggling to cope, groups like The Compassionate Friends run local and online support for bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents.
Sometimes being in a room with people who truly understand is what helps most. If someone tells you they’re having thoughts of not wanting to live please encourage them to reach out to a doctor or call or text 988 to talk to someone right away.
Final Thoughts
When you lose a child, nothing fixes it. There will be days even years later where getting out of bed takes everything out of the parents.
But for them prayer can be the one place she they don’t have to put on a brave face. They can just show up as they are, be that angry or numb or heartbroken.
So for every parent praying through their own tears and every friend lifting someone else up I hope these prayers for the loss of a child give you the words when you can’t find your own.
