Tombstone quotes are a little strange like that. You have almost no room, the words are permanent and yet those words still have say so much. It’s a lot of pressure for a short line which is why so many people get stuck.

How Short Should a Tombstone Quote Be?
Shorter than you probably think. Most engravers will tell you that space on a headstone runs out fast once you’ve added a name, the dates and maybe a small design. A quote of around one to two lines, or roughly ten words or fewer, is probably best and will stay easy to read for years to come.
There’s a practical side to it too. Engraving is usually priced by the character or the line. So a shorter quote can also be a the cheaper option.
But really the best reason to keep it short is that a line is easier to take in when someone stops to visit. A visitor reads a short quote in a single breath and that little pause is often the whole point.
A quick tip before you decide on anything: write your shortlist out by hand then read each one out loud. If one really hits you hard or makes you feel emotional then that’s a good sign it should be that one you pick.

How to Choose the Right Short Tombstone Quote
With a list this long it’s easy to feel more stuck than when you started. It’s daunting , I know.
First though think about the one thing you most want a stranger to know if they paused at the stone in twenty years. Their faith? Their humour? How much they were loved? That can help narrow things down fast.
Then shortlist three or four and think ok them for a few days. Read them out loud. Maybe show them to one other person who loved the same person. You’ll usually find that one line comes out on top and you’ll be more drawn to. That’s the one to go for.
And if nothing on this list feels quite right don’t use one because you feel you have to. A name and dates with the words “loved” or “cherished” underneath is good enough. Short and honest is better than something forced.
